GENERAL - ABOUT THE QUIZ:

What is the purpose of the Quiz?

The primary purpose is just to get you to think about your marriage / relationship.

The secondary purpose is to allow you to score each issue raised in the Quiz (350 Questions covering 40 Topics) so that you can assign some relativity into how "well" your relationship "performs" in each of these areas. The Quiz enables you to compare your Quiz results with the results of other couples.

The third purpose, and not necessarily in order of importance, is for you to have some fun. Lighten up and recognize and enjoy the foibles of your relationship, along with its obvious sources of pleasure.

What benefit can we gain from doing this Quiz in isolation, at the end of an internet connection?!

We believe it's a matter of "physician, heal thyself". You and your partner, and no one else, are the experts in your own relationship. You know more about it than any consultant, adviser or expert. Every relationship is complex and unique. Advisers and councillors spend most of their interviewing time trying to find out how your particular relationship works so that they can then apply their wisdom to the particular circumstances. You already have that intimate and detailed knowledge. With the help of this Quiz, you are in a strong position to work out how to improve your relationship, or at least stop it from deterioration.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

So does this Quiz replace the experts, councillors and advisers?

Absolutely not!! If you have sufficient concern about your relationship, you may well choose to consult an advisor or expert. Even if you do, this Quiz can help you identify in advance what are the specific problem areas with which you need help. It's like getting your numbers together before you see your accountant. With this Quiz, you are doing an "audit" on your relationship / marriage to identify the problem areas that need attention.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Will the Quiz give me some good advice about my marriage / relationship?

This Quiz does not offer any advice or purport to offer any advice. There are too many marriage and relationship experts out there for us to attempt to improve on their efforts. In addition there are hundreds, if not thousands, of books on relationships. Most of these books have something good to offer. This Quiz will help you identify your main problem areas so that, if you choose to proceed further down the road to relationship improvement, you can better select the most appropriate adviser or book.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

What is a "score" for each Question?

Each Question is actually a statement, and you are asked to assess how closely you agree with this statement in regard to your own relationship. You score 10 if it's a perfect fit, and zero if it's completely inaccurate. Mostly you will score somewhere between these extremes on most questions.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Does a low score mean that our relationship is a mess?

Not at all. The Questions in this Quiz represent the most conventional or even traditional views toward the Topic in question. Not only may these conventional views be wrong, but also many relationships are very successful but very unconventional. Furthermore, many traditional views are not as valid as they once were. The scoring of the Quiz will help you to identify where, if anywhere, you diverge from a largely conventional approach and, if you choose to use the comparison facilities, where you diverge from other couples, and your interpretation of these divergences is all that really counts.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Why do you score each of the 40 Topics individually?

The overall Quiz score is probably fairly meaningless, although informative and amusing (see previous question). By scoring all 40 Topics you can see the overall shape or profile of your relationship, and which of the Topics look like they might need attention, or look like they are the mainstays of your relationship, or which are neither one or the other. With this overall picture in mind, you can then "bore down" into the individual Questions in each Topic (360 in total) to see the reason for the Topic result.

STORING THE QUIZ SCORES and "COOKIES":

Where are my Quiz scores stored? Are they secure from prying eyes?

Your Quiz scores are stored on your own computer hard drive using a "cookie" which is set or reset when you complete each Topic and go to another page (see the next question for an explanation of a cookie). We use this method so that your privacy is ensured. Only your computer can access this cookie (to be technical, it is a Javascript "client" cookie, not a CGI "server" cookie, and can only be read or written to your disk drive by your computer). If you choose to contribute to our statistical database of Quiz results and hence to compare your score or profile with other couples, then you must take specific action to send your scores to us. It cannot happen inadvertently or without your action.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

What is a Cookie?

A Javascript "cookie" is a small piece of information that a downloaded Web page can store in a designated file on your computer's hard drive. It is commonly used, for example, to record how many times you have visited a certain web site. We do not use it for this purpose. We use a cookie to enable you to store your Quiz scores on your own computer hard drive. For your privacy, we do not access or upload these scores to the server. Most quizzes do store responses on the server. We could just as easily do it this way, but we believe your privacy and confidentiality are sufficiently important for us to go to the extra effort to safeguard them.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

When I try to exit a Topic after scoring it, I get a message saying "Cookies not enabled." What does this mean?

This means that you (or someone at your end) has set your browser to reject all cookies. You will not be able to score the Quiz under these circumstances. If you wish to score the Quiz Questions, and save the scores for later reference or calculate your overall Quiz score and Topic scores, you will have to enable cookies in your browser. You can do this in Microsoft Internet Explorer by selecting Tools / Internet Options / Security, make sure that the Internet icon is highlighted, then click on the Custom Level button, then scroll down to the "Cookies" section headed "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer", and select the Enable radio button. If you want to be asked every time any site tries to store a cookie on your computer (including our site) you could select the Prompt radio button (but it may get a little annoying before long). If you are not using Explorer, go to the Help facility for your browser and you can find out how to enable cookies on your particular browser.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Can I accept your Quiz scores cookie only, and reject all other cookies from other sites?

Yes, you can do this by selecting the Prompt option as described in the answer to the previous question. However, it might get a little tedious after a while. But if it makes you feel more comfortable, go for it. That's what the facility is there for.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Am I taking a security risk if I enable cookies?

Most Internet users have cookies enabled without even realizing it. There is a lot of paranoia about enabling cookies. The reality is that a cookie gives a site access to a very small storage area on your computer hard drive (4K), and it is not possible for the site to access any other part of your disk storage via a cookie. We use the cookie simply to allow us to retain data (your scores) on your own computer from one page load to the next, and from one Quiz session to the next. We could have taken the approach of saving your data on our server, but we took the view that your privacy would be better protected if we saved your scores on your own disk using the cookie approach.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Do you ever "upload" my Quiz results to your server?

We offer this capability to allow you to compare your Quiz results with the results of other couples, so as to add extra meaning and value to the exercise. This is entirely at your discretion. Unless you take specific action to send us your results, they will continue to be stored in a cookie on your own disk, and we will not, and indeed cannot, access them directly for any purpose.

BACK    TO    INDEX    OF    QUESTIONS

Can I look at my cookie or delete it?

You can find your own cookie folder on your hard drive and see what kind of information is being stored in it, and by which sites. You can also delete the files in the cookie folder if you wish (which, of course, effectively deletes all the cookies that were stored there, including any Quiz scores you have already entered if you delete the Quiz cookie). Cookies are stored in different places in different browsers. For example, in Windows XP Home / Professional, Internet Explorer stores cookies in a folder called "Cookies" in your user-name subfolder in the "Documents and Settings" sub-folder in the "Local Disk (C:)" folder. It can be a bit tricky finding it. Other browsers have their own particular methods.
